Springs Retirment Village hosts Mardi Gras

Springs Retirement Village celebrated Mardi Gras with vibrant colours and music on Tuesday.

Springs Retirement Village celebrated Mardi Gras with vibrant colours and music on Tuesday. The festival saw the residents entertained by fire dancers, a balloon artist on stilts and a unicyclist.

There was also an assortment of delicious foods to try, from cupcakes to ice cream and slush puppies and a filling meal.

The shows transported the residents and their families to a world of fun and imagination.

Methodist Homes’ group general manager, Danie le Roux, says these events hosted by the organisation for the residents seek to not just entertain them but to give them purpose.

“These functions form part of our ethos and philosophy, which embody care and compassion for our residents.

“We seek not to just see to our residents’ physical needs but their mental and emotional needs as well, as being away from loved ones takes its toll on them.”

Le Roux, who started his role in June, says the appreciation he sees in the elderly when something is done for them is amazing.

“This environment speaks to your soul and gives you a sense of fulfilment.”

The residents took turns to try and hit the piñata to get to the centre filled with sweets. Arts and crafts were provided so that the seniors could create their own colourful masks.

A large heart-shaped balloon was the prize to the resident whose mask was voted as the most beautiful.

Residents also donned Mardi Gras-themed props and posed for a photo in the photo booth, capturing the morning’s events and creating lasting memories.
