Illegal dumping a pain for residents

Du Toit said the rehabilitation will start this week.

Selcourt resident June Baker is frustrated with the illegal dumping on Ramona Road. She does not believe that the metro is fulfilling its part in resolving the issue.

“This site is opposite the school and is becoming a health hazard. We pay our rates and taxes every month but nobody cares. We pick up the rubbish every day to keep the sidewalk clean but unfortunately do not have the funds to remove this rubble,” she said.

She took it upon herself to take photos of the refuse and people she claimed were dumping at the site. She sent the photos to the metro and the ward councillor, but has received no response.

“The illegal dumping is due to the contractors of the new water reservoir not rehabilitating the site. I reported this matter to councillor Mike du Toit when they first started creating these large humps of soil on the side of the road.

“His response was that the contractor would rehabilitate the area when the contract was completed,” she added.

Baker also believes that the site affects the value of the houses.

“We all know that nobody cares about the residents, but we have young children playing in the playground just opposite this site. We had our first break-in two weeks ago in the 10 years that I have lived here,” she explained.

Du Toit said the rehabilitation will start this week.

“I had a meeting with the site manager on Friday and he said a subcontractor has been appointed to begin the rehabilitation this Wednesday (October 4),” he explained.
