Sweetest way to raise a buck

Cupcakes of Hope managed to raise a little over R684 278 over the weekend.

Cupcakes of Hope hosted another successful fundraiser at the Springs Mall on Saturday. Four-year-old warrior Lindokuhle Makhubo is a beneficiary of the organisation.

He is in remission after being diagnosed with extrarenal malignant rhabdoid tumours (MRT) in 2020.

“Around October (2020) I noticed that every time I tried to touch his right thigh, he would cry. I felt the lump eventually,” explained his mother Mbalenhle.

She decided to seek medical help. In December Lindokuhle had surgery to remove the tumour.

“That is when they confirmed that it was cancer,” she added.

Mbalenehle admits that it has been a tough journey, but she is very proud of her son.

“He’s been through chemotherapy and radiation. He did not understand what was going on and would cry from all the pain,” she said.

The toddler lost his speech and could no longer walk after all the treatment.

“He also lost a lot of weight, but I knew that he would recover. Now I can see him improving every day,” said Mbalenhle.

Lindokuhle is one of many children, and their families, who have been supported by Cupcakes Of Hope.

The organisation raises funds through community-driven initiatives, which drive community interaction and grassroots cancer awareness, including ‘baking a difference’ for National Cupcake Day and the #Bake4Cancer fundraisers.

They assist with paying medical bills and other day-to-day needs.

This year more than 2,500 Educational Activity Care Packs have been delivered to all 20 pediatric oncology wards across South Africa.

Brigite Pita, the organisation’s co-ordinator for Springs said, “We had a few kids volunteer which was a blessing to see. They loved dedicating some time to helping, as well as my team of cupcake angels volunteers who have been with me for five years.

“We help over 270 kids with their cancer medical needs, nutritious goods or funds transport for treatment. This day couldn’t be possible without the help and donations of some of our members in the Springs community, which is always greatly appreciated.”
