Residents defy weather for clean-up

The volunteers arrived at 07:00 despite the weather warning of possible thunderstorms.

Ekurhuleni Community Action, a group of concerned residents, organised a successful community clean-up last Monday.

The event, supported by the local businesses and the City of Ekurhuleni, aimed to clean up the environment, and restore the beauty and safety of the town.

The volunteers arrived at the parks at 07:00, despite the weather warning of possible thunderstorms and worked tirelessly until noon, picking up litter, trimming the grass and bushes, and fixing fences.

Residents got their hands dirty and socialised during the clean-up on Monday.

In Springs, the sites cleaned were 12th Street Park, Payneville, and Daggafontein. Other sites were in Tsakane Exts 8 and 12.

“The event was a great example of civic engagement and environmental responsibility, as well as a fun and rewarding activity for the participants,” said Jacob Smith, one of the organisers.

The volunteers expressed their satisfaction and pride in seeing the park transformed into a more pleasant and inviting space for learners on holiday and everyone to enjoy.

The town is plagued with illegal dumping.

“We thank the Springs Advertiser, EK Community Radio, Ekurhuleni Radio, the municipality, local businesses, schools in Springs and Clr Mike du Toit for their support.

“The community clean-up was a huge success, not only for improving the appearance and functionality of the park but also for strengthening the bonds and cooperation among neighbours,” he added.

Ekhuruleni Community Action encouraged everyone to join future clean-up events scheduled for December 16, tagged the Festive Clean-up Campaign.
