WATCH: Metro resolves water leak after 10 weeks

Report water leaks to the metro to help preserve clean water.

Water leaks may be one of the main reasons reservoirs are running dry in the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE). In September, a concerned resident notified the Springs Advertiser about a water leak on the lawn outside the SASSA offices on 6th Avenue.

A visit to the office revealed claims that water had been leaking for over 10 weeks. The employees reported they logged many calls with the city, the first being on July 24. There was, however, no resolution.

They received an SMS to notify them the city resolved the call while clean water continued to go to waste.

According to the city’s spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, they incorrectly logged the call under the operations team as a pipe burst, where it was a connection pipe to a water meter.

“Unfortunately, because of an administrative error, the call was closed and not transferred to the correct division. Although the original call was closed, the metering division opened a new incident under a new call number.

“The supervisor at the incorrect division to where they directed the original call approved the closure since they verbally communicated the problem to the correct division,” he said.

He added the city priorities the repair of water leaks and stated they would complete the leak repair on September 21.

The leak has since been repaired. The city encouraged residents to report leaks to their call centre on 0860 543 000 or email call.centre@ekurhuleni.gov.za
