Cash-in-transit heist rocks Springs

A cash-in-transit heist that involved 20 armed men took place on Wednesday evening on Wit Road in Selection Park.

A cash-in-transit heist that involved 20 armed men took place on Wednesday late afternoon on Wit Road in Selection Park.

The cash truck crew had just finished collecting money from different outlets.

Selcourt Towers was the last collection point and the crew were on the way back to base via Wit Road in Selection Park when it was cornered by two vehicles.

Gunmen started shooting at the truck and its tyres with automatic rifles and 9mm pistols.

The driver of the cash truck stopped and the robbers forced the crew out of the truck.

They disarmed the driver and his crew, forced them to lie on the ground and proceeded to bomb the truck.

Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala said the robbers escaped the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

“The suspects got away in a white iX 35 and a silver BMW. The registration numbers are unknown. Cartridges and a black Nike bag were found on Butler Road towards Kwa-Thema,” he said.

The heist comes after Crime Intelligence Unit received information regarding planned heists.

Upon confirmation of the heist, the Gauteng Traffic Police helicopter was summoned. However, due to bad weather, it was unable to be dispatched.

A few hours later the Johannesburg Flying Squad traced the suspects at 20:20 on the M1 South just before the Booysens off-ramp in Johannesburg, where a shootout ensued with the suspects who were travelling in a Toyota Quantum.

One suspect was certified dead at the scene while two others were apprehended.

Tshabalala confirmed that there were some other casualties.
