Springs Central Fire Station building in need of some TLC

Springsites concerned about fire station.

Some residents of Springs have expressed concern over the state of the Springs Central Fire Station building.
They claim that the infrastructure is falling apart.

There are complaints of overgrown grass and the wood on the doors has extensive water damage.
The building is a heritage site.

In response to the Springs Advertiser’s enquiry about the state of the building, the City of Ekurhuleni said it is a multi-department entity of which fire and rescue services are being administered from 35 stations across the city.

“Rendering of firefighting and rescue services is the primary responsibility of all human resources employed and based in the fire stations,” explained Zweli Dlamini, the city’s spokesperson.

“In terms of building responsibilities, the Real Estate Department is the solitary department overlooking all municipal buildings in terms of functionality.

“Just like all other fire station buildings, any challenges encountered are being reported by the DEMS management to bring it the workable standards guided by building regulations and occupancy standards.”

When asked if the metro is up to date with the maintenance of the building, Dlamini said, “Yes, we do get updates almost every week there is a system that is in use.”

He also said that the building does get attention due to its status as a heritage site, but with the limited resources and competing public needs, some work is delayed to cover other necessities.

When asked if residents are at liberty to help with the maintenance of the building, Dlaimini responded, “Yes, it has never happened, but proposals can be considered by the council.

“The assistance would occur under municipal supervision, specifications and materials must match the building and the history of the building must be restored.”
