Rand Water and Johannesburg Water urge consumers to use water sparingly

Water supplies are low because of high demand. Johannesburg Water and Rand Water urgently ask residents to use water sparingly.

Rand Water and Johannesburg Water have noticed increasing water consumption from customer meters in the system.

This increase strains the system, and people can help by reducing their water consumption. Rand Water’s primary and secondary stations are operating at their maximum capacity.

However, the entity cannot maintain its reservoirs at high water levels because of the increased consumption in the metro and surrounding areas.

Due to the system being integrated, even customers using water sparingly are affected. High potable water consumption could see the system collapse, resulting in intermittent water supply.

SA is a water-scarce country, so consumer behaviour is vital to ensure a sustainable and equitable water supply.

Rand Water and Johannesburg Water urge consumers to conserve water by implementing these water-saving tips:

• Avoid watering lawns and gardens with clean drinking water.

• Refrain from filling swimming pools until consumption has reduced.

• Do not clean paved areas and driveways with clean drinking water.

• Wash cars only on weekends using buckets.

• Take a two-minute shower instead of a bath.

• Do not leave the tap running when brushing your teeth.

• Fix all leaking plumbing fixtures in the house.

• Flush toilets only for the brown, not the yellow.

• Report leaking water pipes to municipalities in the City of Johannesburg.

Rand Water and Johannesburg Water are committed to providing a constant supply of high-quality drinking water to all its customers, thus ensuring the sustainable security of the water supply.

All consumers are asked to use water sparingly and wisely to help in this endeavour.
