Community still unhappy with the landfill site

The community said there were no residents working at the site.

Kwa-Thema – The MMC for Environment and Waste Management, Clr Eunice Matloga, met with the community of Kwa-Thema Ext 4 at the Rietfontein Landfill site last Wednesday.

This meeting was an update on the site’s opening since the community shut it down due to complaints that it was a health hazard.

Matloga asked that the site be opened for function because it had been remedied, and some people had started to dump outside it.

She also said the trucks from other areas across the city would no longer come to dump because there were now five dumping sites, with others having reopened.

One community member said there were security guards on site who could ensure there was no dumping because the area used for dumping was still a municipal site.

The community refused to allow the site to open and asked that they meet the contractor first, who would put them at ease by telling them the place would no longer smell and that the flies would be controlled.

Matloga said the city would bring the contractor to meet with the residents this week but didn’t give a date.

She said because the community also complained about unemployment and that no one from the community worked at the site, they would speak to the 12 committee members appointed by the residents to find employment solutions.

The MMC and divisional head will have a meeting on Monday with the contractor to speak about the issues raised by the contractor.

The residents will also meet with Ward 77 Clr Thulani Dunjana to prepare for the meeting with the contractor, which will help them speak with one voice when the day arrives.
