Classical music: by popular demand

The festival will also strategically promote young emerging soloists from across the country.

BE100, in partnership with Carnival City Entertainment, hosted a media launch for the inaugural Vukani Classical Music Festival on Wednesday.

The brainchild of Mmusi Morekure and Bongani Vilakazi of BE100, the festival will set the Mardi Gras stage alight on November 5.

“What makes this a unique experience is that for the first time, we have a festival of this magnitude focusing on classical music,” explained Morekure.

Directed by Vilakazi, the production boasts international star Joseph Clark as a guest artist and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Turkey-based local tenor Lethokuhle Skosana is on the line-up, with the music directed by maestro Schalk van der Merwe.

The Ekurhuleni Chorus will perform at the event as well.

“We are taking iconic South African songs, some rearranged, and playing them with a full orchestra. We guarantee a euphonic experience,” he added.

The festival will also strategically promote young emerging soloists from across the country.

“We have up-and-coming artists sharing a stage with the greats. We hope the experience will inspire them to hone their crafts,” said Morekure.

This annual festival aims to provide a boost to the city’s economy. Tickets are available on Computicket.
