No tjo-tjo, no licence

Operators gatvol with unreasonable bribes.

Driving school operators are at their wit’s end over alleged bribe demands made by examiners at the Ekurhuleni Traffic Licence Department in Springs.

“It has become an accepted part of the system for examiners to get bribes before the learner drivers take their tests. Over the years, the examiners have become greedier,” explained one of the driving school owners.

According to this owner and others, who have not been named due to fear of victimisation, the bribe has gone up from R1 000 to upwards of R2 000 per learner driver.

“Most of our clients cannot afford to pay this amount and if they show up for the test and the money has not been paid, they are automatically failed by the examiner,” he added.

“On average, each examiner may test about seven learner drivers per day. If each learner driver pays R2 000, the examiner can make up to R14 000 daily.

“We want the metro to relieve us of this burden. The examiners work for them, and they’re making our lives very difficult.

“If I pay R14 000 just so that my clients get their licences then I will no longer make a profit. There is no point in working. We are working only for them to be enriched.”

No comment has been received from the City of Ekurhuleni.
