Sewage woes for Springs residents

The metro acknowledges the increase in reported cases.

The Springs Advertiser has been inundated with complaints from residents all over Springs regarding sewage spills in their neighbourhoods and homes.

There has been a rise in reported cases as the winter months begin. Residents have voiced their concerns and frustrations as this matter continues to escalate.

Sandra Pretorius, a resident of Casseldale, called on behalf of a neighbour.

“The sewage flows onto the streets and has made puddles in some people’s homes. It stinks and causes flies to come into the houses – this cannot possibly be safe,” laments Pretorius.

Dersley resident Marius Jonker also submitted a complaint recently about a now-fixed sewage spill on Orpiment Road.

In a frustrated message, he highlighted how the inactions of the City of Ekurhuleni raised many questions for him and his fellow residents.

“It has been like this for over two weeks. Do we have to wait for another cholera outbreak? Or must the president first appoint a task team to establish the source of this sewage spill? How many more people need to die before this will be repaired and cleaned?

“How much more must flow in the Presidents Dam and down to the Vaal River before someone can clear this problem?

“Must we keep paying the salaries of the municipal workers and the councillors for doing nothing? These roads needed to be closed off, preventing citizens from being exposed,” vents Jonker.

Springs Ext resident Trudie van Zyl, endearingly referred to as Tannie Trudie, remarked how the current sewage problem results from overpopulation, especially in the Springs Ext.

“The sewer flows from the streets right into my house. I have never had these issues in all the years until they built all these extra backrooms. The pipeline cannot carry the growing population and its load,” remarks van Zyl.

Celeste Snyman, a resident and employee of a Springs business, said they had issues at her workplace for three weeks.

The recently fixed sewage spill on Orphiment Road.

“Upon investigating and using our own plumbers, we have found the cause of the problem was not on our premises but in the municipal system,” says Snyman.

The city’s spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed one of the major causes of this sewage problem was the discharging of foreign objects into the city’s drainage system.

“We are currently experiencing a backlog of complaints.

“We are attending to blockages to the best of our ability and also appeal to the public to avoid throwing foreign objects into the drainage system,” advises Dlamini.
