Mother and daughter team up for healthy and delicious Gemmer
Family means everything to the Hobbs.
Going into business has always proved to be a risky venture, but it has not deterred this mother-daughter duo from Springs from going after their dreams.
Mother Mmasechaba Hobbs and her daughter Carol decided to go into business after stumbling on a winning recipe for a delicious and nutritious ginger-based drink.
Known as ‘Gemmer’, Mmasechaba discovered the health benefits of the drink during the lockdown of 2020.
“One can remember how difficult it was to buy or find healthy food items during the lockdown.
“Through trial and error and while drinking Gemmer, I was able to heal my digestive system issues.”
She added that the drink was so good that she gave it to the rest of her family to try out.
“I ended up giving all my children and grandchildren Gemmer so that their bodies can fight any sign of flu. My daughter Carol saw the gem of how this could benefit others, especially people in my age group and that is how the drink was born.”
Describing their relationship as business partners, Mmasechaba said they keep things professional.
“We have learnt to keep work relations just that. We listen to each other as we are combining various experiences.

“We pool our skills. Carol brought in her knowledge and skill of business marketing, public and media relations, packaging and communications, as she is a qualified media personality.
“I came in with my knowledge of project management and business, retail and financial services.”
When describing the taste of their family recipe, which is formulated with a special type of ginger, Mmasechaba said drinkers must be ready for a refreshing experience.
“We want people to understand that our Gemmer is organic. No preservatives have been added.
“We use a specific type of ginger which is aiding in treatments for cancer patients, people who have suffered strokes, pregnant mothers, the elderly and children.”
She added that she wants to see their family drink become a country-wide success.
“We are looking at getting our Gemmer in offices, stores, hospitals, schools, old age homes and in every household.”
