Selection Park residents frustrated over abandoned piece of land

Uncut grass and suspected illegal dumping should be reported to the metro.

The residents of Fairways Avenue in Selection Park were up in arms over a neglected piece of land between them and the Springs Country Club.

This land borders the residential area and the local golf club.

Allegations of uncut grass, soliciting, illegal dumping, and vagrants defecating on the land were part of the complaints.

The residents complained because the metro and the club took no responsibility for the land or its maintenance.

The metro gave vague answers when asked who was responsible for its upkeep. Christo Naude, the club chairperson, refused to comment but did not deny the matter.

He also did not deny that the club was contractually responsible for maintaining it.

When asked what steps they would take to ensure the land was maintained regardless of whom is responsible, the metro responded by stating, “The club can still cut the area because it creates a horrible, unjustly site and environmental hazard for its users, and to avoid potential vagrant activities that could lead the country club to a loss.

“The club is urged to directly contact the Environmental Resources and Waste Management Department with a depot on the corner of Plantation and Swim roads, Geduld, to help with grass-cutting on the land.”

The residents have grown tired of the inaction by both parties.

Knowledge Moyo, a Selection Park resident, was wary of the land and feared for his wife and daughter’s safety because they walked past it daily when taking his daughter to daycare.

“They have to walk past that space in the mornings and afternoons. I understand the street is fairly busy, but I don’t want my family to fall prey to thieves or chance takers,” he lamented.
