Mother and son shot in Petersfield after tyre-spiking incident

The motive for the shooting is unknown.

Unknown assailants shot a woman and her son in the early hours of Friday at the corner of Vaal Drive and East Geduld Road in Petersfield.

According to Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, the woman was travelling in a white Ford Escort with her son to drop him off at work when the front tyres burst.

“As the vehicle stopped, the two men standing nearby shot at the two occupants before fleeing down the street,” said Tshabalala.

“The son was wounded in the neck. Both he and his mother were transported to a hospital.”

The police found three steel spikes, used to slash through the vehicle tyres, and two 9mm cartridges on the scene.

“The damage to the car was one bullet hole to the left side of the windscreen and another one on the left side of the roof of the vehicle,” said Tshabalala.

Tshabalala said the motive for the shooting is unknown. Investigations into the incident are underway.
