Taxi driver arrested for armed robbery in Springs

The taxi driver was arrested and taken to the Springs SAPS for robbing a female of R17 000 on May 17.

On May 17, a security company received a phone call from a business owner in Casseldale informing them of an armed robbery that took place in front of his shop.

Upon arrival, they met up with a woman who had been robbed of R17 000 by two men armed with firearms, one of whom she identified from earlier at the same shop.

According to Springs SAPS communications officer Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, she explained that she knows the possible whereabouts of the one suspect, as he is a taxi driver. She was then escorted by security guards to the given address.

“When they arrived, she recognised him sitting inside the taxi. The security guards flagged down an EMPD unit to stop for assistance and the man was instructed by the EMPD officers to alight from the taxi,” said Tshabalala.

He was apprehended and taken to the Springs police station, where a case of armed robbery was opened. Tshabalala added that the taxi belonging to the man was impounded.
