Joss Hoyle, the 83-year-old teddy bear knitter

Resident finds joy in knitting teddy bears for children.

At 83 years old, Joss Hoyley has acquired a lot of skills throughout her life, including a passion for knitting.

The Edelweis resident has used a lot of yarn in her spare time to knit blankets, and now she is a master of thread and needle.

“There was no way I could avoid knitting because my mother was very strict with us,” said Joss.

“Growing up, we were forced to learn how to cook, clean, and knit, and that’s why I never looked back at knitting.”

The philanthropist began knitting teddy bears 10 months ago, saying that she was inspired by helping those in need.

“For every child that comes my way, not only for charity,” Joss affirms.

Her daughter, Anita Knott, expresses that her mother is one of the kindest and most giving people she has ever known.

“She always puts others before herself. She has brought great joy to many little hearts,” Anita remarked.

A giver at heart, she found herself knitting teddy bears for children from her street, whom she has grown to be fond of.

Joss adds that two teddy bears have already reached Malawi, which has given her much joy.

She’s often threading away, creating knitted teddy bears in every colour of the rainbow.

With the recent help of her friend Thelma O’Toole, they are knitting more teddy bears to help spread the joy of giving.

If Joss is not cleaning her home and preparing meals, she’s at the MachKnitz centrum socialising with knitters who share the same passion as hers.
