Family creates memories at BNAC marathon

Mother Kerry-Ann Scrase ran with her daughter, Madeline as she took part in her first 21.1km race.

They say a family that plays together, stays together.

Meet local residents Kerry-Ann and Madeline Scrase. They are part of a family that is bonded by creating lasting family memories by participating in special events together.

Kerry-Ann ran hand in hand with Madeline, who took part in her first 21.1km race on March 5 at the Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) marathon sponsored by Kwikscaff.

“It was very cool. I thought I was going to end up walking for the last three kilometres. I’m very proud that I only walked four times in the entire race,” Madeline said.

Inspired by her parents, who have always believed in celebrating key milestones in their lives by challenging themselves, Madeline plans to celebrate her 21st birthday by completing the 21.1km at the Two Oceans Marathon on April 16.

“My mom and dad ran in the Comrades Marathon for their 20th wedding anniversary. I’ve always had a thing for doing cool milestones for my birthday.

“My brother and I have always been inspired to do these cool things instead of a nice party. I’m looking forward to the Two Oceans,” she said.

Kerry-Ann said crossing the line holding hands with her daughter was a proud moment for her as a parent.

“It was incredible. It’s such a special thing to inspire your children and get them to participate in such important things. It’s even more special to do them in your home town.

“To do her first half-marathon in Benoni where she and her brother grew up running with us is special and I’m very proud,” Kerry-Ann stated.

She said she and her husband have always enjoyed creating memories and this is what they are trying to inculcate in their children.

“We live in a country with so many great events. As South Africans, we owe it to ourselves to take part in these events. My husband and I have done 42 Cycle Tours between the two of us.

“We’ve always got the children involved. Since they were born, they would come and do race with us. These things create memories.”
