EMPD nab alleged drug peddlers.

Members of the EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit intercepted two suspects for possession and dealing in illicit substances on Thursday.

At 12:30, the group on patrol received information about a suspect selling drugs to members of the community in the Kwa-Thema area.

They acted on the information and cornered a 37-year-old man at his house on Malope Street in Ext 3.

Upon searching the suspect, the EMPD officers discovered 22 packets of nyaope.

According to Constable Ignatius Maphike, the EMPD’s media liaison officer, the packets were wrapped in brown tape and have an estimated street value of R1 100.

The suspect was taken to the Kwa-Thema Police Station and charged with possession and dealing with illicit substances.

He will soon appear in the Kwa-Thema Magistrate’s Court.

In another incident at 12:45, the officers visited a supermarket on 4th Street in Springs, where an undocumented man in his 40s was arrested.

When he was searched, five packets of nyaope and 58 packets of illicit cigarettes were found.

He was taken to the Springs Police Station and charged with possession and dealing in illicit substances and cigarettes.

He is expected to soon appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court. Charges under the Immigrations Act (Act 13 of 2002) could also be added.
