EMPD crime prevention operation lead to arrest

Two males who were robbing people of their money and possessions in the Springs CBD have been arrested.

Two men were arrested by the EMPD Bronberg Precinct on Sunday for illegally possessing an unlicensed firearm and other stolen property.

The arrest happened as a result of information the crime prevention operation got regarding the two men robbing people in the Springs CBD of their money and possessions.

The suspicious pair was being pursued by a hysterical male as the officers were on alert on Second Avenue, and they could see them running in different directions. Following the man, the officers cornered one male and caught the other on Seventh Avenue.

Lerato Monyane, an EMPD media liaison officer, said further investigations revealed that the man who chased the two was a victim who had been robbed at gunpoint of his cellphone.

Three cellphones, including one that belonged to the victim, a 9mm Glock firearm with a defaced serial number, and two sunglasses were discovered in the duos’ possession by the officers.

They are being held at the Springs Police Station and are scheduled to appear at the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon.
