War on drugs reaches day three

Groups gathered to continue their war on drugs.

A crowd of Operation Dudula members, queue marshals, taxi drivers and taxi owners continued their war against drugs in the Springs CBD today (January 19).

Their mission started on Tuesday as they undertook to deal with nyaope addicts in the CBD and the taxi rank.

Today, the groups raided houses and establishments believed to be drug houses or belonging to drug dealers.

They allegedly found dagga and nyaope at a house on 8th Street.

The crowd ended up going to a building on 4th Street where they discovered substances believed to be drugs.

The police then moved in to execute control measures as the crowd was getting rowdy.

An individual from the crowd has been arrested on suspicion of theft.

SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala said investigations are underway.

“We urge people not to take matters into their own hands. The SAPS condemns any acts of violence and possession of drugs,” he said.

He also cautioned residents against the spreading of false information.

“Anyone found to be falsifying information will be charged accordingly,” added Tshabalala.

A foreign national, who is a resident of Springs CBD, lamented the events taking place.

“I am scared these attacks could turn xenophobic. I fear for my life and that of my family,” she said.
