DEMS on high alert

Motorists as well need to keep to minimum speed limit because of poor visibility during rain.

Due to the persistent rainfall, local Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) remains on high alert for possible flooding, drowning and other life-threatening emergencies.

This follows warnings of disruptive rain and severe thunderstorms with possible strong damaging winds, accompanied by hail and heavy downpours expected in Gauteng.

DEMS is closely monitoring the water streams, known low-lying bridges, communities on the flood lines and all known areas prone to flooding.

Those residing next to the river streams are cautioned to remain on high alert, even if it doesn’t rain in their areas.

It might be raining somewhere, and rivers are flooded and causing devastating impacts to unsuspecting communities.

Residents with perimeter wall fencing around their properties remain at high risk as well because of the water damming up.

They are urged to create escape tunnels at the base of the walls to allow the free flow of water.

Motorists need to keep to the minimum speed limit because of poor visibility during rain. This is because road surface traction is poor and potholes are also not easily visible.

It should be noted low-lying bridges and subway bridges are predominately flooded and are not easily identifiable.
