EMPD leads clean-up joint campaign to enforce by-laws

The joint operation kicked off at 4th Street in Springs CBD, where the EMPD swept the streets in support of various CPF members, Environmental Health Department and Roads and Waste Department.

The Springs EMPD, in a joint operation with CPF members, the Environmental Health Department and the Roads and Waste Department, held a clean-up in the Springs CBD from November 28 to December 3 as a way to enforce municipal by-laws.

The operation comes after the Springs EMPD saw recent developments at the War Memorial Park, which prompted them to contact Ward 75 Clr Charmaine Kock.

“They said if one woman can walk in there and clean out that entire area, they as the EMPD can offer their support in cleaning Springs,” said Kock.

“It was quite alarming when we started considering the amount of work, but people started realising that we were there not to play games. There was too much rubbish, and as a result, the first truck was overloaded within 15 minutes of cleaning.”

The operation, which started at 06:00, saw the commitment of everyone as EMPD embarked on a journey to enforce municipal by-laws within the Springs CBD.“They cleaned up the pavements and broke down illegal shacks on the pavement,” said Kock.

EMPD spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa said their vision is to make sure that Springs is clean and well maintained.
“We will strive until we achieve,” said Thepa.

The joint parties are hoping more people can take part in restoring Springs to its former glory.“We are here and we want to clean up our town, but we are not going to be able to clean up the mess from so many years,” said Kock.

“We’ve proved it with the cleaning of the War Memorial Park that if residents and the community of Springs can come together, it is possible to have a cleaner and safer town.

“This has not been happening for a long time, it’s happening now and we need the support from other CPFs and our community to keep this town clean.”
