N17 Hospital celebrates World Radiography Day

World Radiography Day is celebrated on November 8 each year.

Netcare N17 Hospital celebrated World Radiography Day on Tuesday, a day that marks the anniversary of the discovery of X-rays.

“On this day in 1895, X-rays were discovered by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen,” said the hospital’s head of radiography, Bernita Swartz.

“The first image captured was of his wife’s hand, showing its skeletal outline with a ring on one of her fingers.”

The staff at the radiography department were filled with excitement as the day brought a lot of awareness to patients.

“We brought awareness about our profession because not a lot of people know about it,” said Swartz.

Assistant practice manager Michelle Johnson said everyone was in a jolly mood and in high spirits.

“We all contributed to making the commemoration a success. We also handed out pamphlets, X-ray-designed cookies, and coffee to our patients. It’s always good when a team works together on something special,” said Johnson.

Swartz said the radiography department is ever-evolving with advances in technology, which gives them an opportunity for growth.

“We’re grateful that we always have new techniques introduced. Radiography is a scarce skill and we need more radiographers,” said Swartz.
