Spurs CC claims big T20 Cup wins

They have now won two out of three matches in the competition so far.

The Actonville Spurs Cricket Club claimed two crucial wins in the Eastern Cricket Premier T20 Cup on October 16 at Lord’s cricket ground.

Following their loss to CBC Boksburg last week, Spurs faced Kwa-Thema and Geluksdal.

Their victories have ensured them crucial points that pushed the club up the rankings in pool A.

Facing Kwa-Thema in the early match, the hosts lost the toss and were sent in to bat first. The opening pair of captain Saahil Khan and Abid Turky posted a blistering first-wicket partnership of 85 runs.

Khan top-scored with 73 runs and was ably assisted by Turky (27) and Sabelo Mabanga (25) while Sufi Mohammed returned with a knock of 17 runs as the hosts posted 167/5 in their 20 overs.

The home side’s bowlers were ruthless as they restricted their opponents to 93 all out, with Zubayr Turkey taking five wickets for seven runs in his four overs.

Despite the visitors’ Mzamo Mboqo offering some resistance with a knock of 42 runs, it wasn’t enough as Spurs won the contest by 74 runs.

In the afternoon game against Geluksdal, the hosts won the toss and sent their visitors to bat first.

The Spurs bowlers continued with their ruthlessness as they had Geluksdal at 35/0 after 10 overs. The visitors, however, managed to claw their way back into the match, posting 123/7.

Yoland Redcliff top-scored for Geluksdal with 32 runs while Alaine Jacobs (25), Jayden Markus (19) and Kabelo Sesedi (16) helped their team post a respectable score.

In reply, Spurs reached their target within 16 overs. The third-wicket partnership between Neil Joubert (58), Abdullah Patel (48 not out) secured a seven-wicket win for the hosts.

The club has appointed homegrown player Khan as captain for the new season while Kyle Degambur will serve as player/coach.

“We have restructured our junior cricket section with U8, U10 and U12 teams playing on Saturday mornings. We have also moved our U14 team to Colts on Sundays. They will be coached by former provincial players Yahya

Seedat and Mark Naik,” said the club’s PRO Zunaid Seedat. Spurs will take the short trip to Rynfield to take on Old Bens on October 23 at 13:30.
