Boxer dreams to win titles

'I grew up in a boxing family where they were all involved in boxing and I believe that is where I started to take it into consideration. I decided to start boxing as an amateur in 2010.'

Growing up Gerhard Thysse’s father used to help out as a boxing trainer at Bert Collins Boxing Club.
Born in Germiston but raised in Springs, Thysse never took boxing seriously and his father never forced him to participate in the sport.
“I grew up in a boxing family where they were all involved in boxing and I believe that is where I started to take it into consideration. I decided to start boxing as an amateur in 2010,” said Thysse.
He said his parents were and still are supportive with the decision since it is a sport the family admires.

“I have achieved the goals that I have set for myself in the amateurs by becoming a three-time South African champion. I won the Zone 4 African Championships title in Botswana and had the privilege to represent my country in Mauritius. I would like to achieve my goals in the professional rankings,” he said.
Thysse is a teacher at Hoërskool Hugenote and is passionate about educating children.
“My schedule becomes hectic because I am a full-time school teacher. I manage my time to both teach and box professionally as I enjoy it. I am truly blessed to be supported by the school.”
The preparation for his last fight was very tough but rewarding in the same way.
“I have put hours of work into it. I was in my best physical shape during the preparation for the fight. I trained twice a day,” he said.
“I am taking it day by day to be known as one of South Africa’s best light heavyweight champions and becoming a role model to the youth and other athletes,” said Thysse.

His dream is to be an active boxer, winning titles and defending records successfully in his career. He looks up to famous heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury.
“He is the greatest of all time. He has had various high and low points in his life but faced it all with great confidence and conquered it. He gives back to the community, has showmanship and great sportsmanship,” he said.
“With me, each time I fight, win or lose, I learn something. It depends on the fight. I guess you just learn from your mistakes and strive to improve,” he said.
He is looking forward to his next fight, which will be confirmed soon. He intends to work hard every day to be fighting fit.
