Boxing sisters set for international stage

The sisters lost their father and boxing coach Freddie Dicks last year and admitted competing without him is a different challenge.

Geannè and Minnet Dicks are determined to uphold their father’s legacy as they prepare to compete internationally.
The sisters lost their father and boxing coach Freddie Dicks last year and admitted competing without him is a different challenge.
Last year, they were selected to represent Gauteng at South Africa Elite and Youth Championships in Kuils River in the Western Cape during September and October.

Minnet Dicks feels more prepared to take on any boxing stage.

“We both qualified to compete in the SA Champs last year. But when the time came, I did not feel mentally prepared to compete.
“So we ended up not going,” explained 20-year-old Minnet.
The sisters thought their dreams of competing in the Commonwealth Games would be delayed for another year.
However, their stars aligned when they received an invitation to compete for a spot on the national team in Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal.

“We could not believe it. We were so excited and knew we have to make the best of the opportunity,” she added.
The trials took place from February 15 to 19.
Older sister Geannè beat two opponents to make it into the national team. This, only six weeks after she gave birth.
Minnet won three fights and lost one. She is now on the national B team.
“I feel fantastic. We realise this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we are going to grab it with both hands,” she said.
Geannè is ready to represent SA in the Sanabo Zone 4 Championships in Angola in April.
