Metro cites financial constraints for state of Geduld Cemetery

"The norm of the grass-cutting cycle at cemeteries is on a monthly basis.”

The City of Ekurhuleni has responded to an article published in the Advertiser’s January 24 edition, ‘Residents ashamed of Geduld Cemetery’.
In the article, the Addie described the neglected state of the cemetery.
At the time the article was written, the cemetery’s fence had been missing and the grass had not been trimmed in a long time.
Zweli Dlamini, metro spokesperson, stated there has been a delay in grass-cutting at cemeteries for this financial year due to the non-availability of funds.

“As a result, cemeteries will be maintained by the limited available resources the City have.
“The norm of the grass-cutting cycle at cemeteries is on a monthly basis. “The City has not been maintaining the cemeteries as per the cycles (eight cycles per year) due to financial constraints.
“Only one cycle per year will be cut at the cemeteries using internal teams. There are 72 appointed contractors that operate on an ad-hoc basis, depending on the budget availability.
“The contractors’ work is constrained by the availability of funds,” he said.
According to Dlamini, contractors are equipped with the appropriate gear.
“Contractors have adequate equipment, such as brush cutters, tractors and vehicles, to maintain the cemeteries. However, as indicated above, there are no funds available for contractors to operate at the cemeteries.
“Internal teams are cutting at the cemeteries,” said Dlamini.
