WEB HEADLINE: Getting to know Makaita Chivonivoni
Springs resident Makaita Chivonivoni loves her town and wants to restore it to a state where residents can once again be proud of it.
Chivonvoni (16), a Grade 11 learner at Springs Girls High, recently spearheaded a major clean-up effort where residents teamed up to clean the streets of Springs.
What made you decide to launch the cleaning project?
I just felt the city deserves to be cleaned. Many people visit the town and feel disgusted with what they see. I wanted to be the one who changes that.
I also wanted to see members of the Springs community working together.
Do you have any future projects in mind for Springs?
I want to continue cleaning the streets and restore pride to this city.
I would also like to help the people on the streets who are struggling with addiction.
My biggest passion is charity and I think through these projects I can show that I am a true leader for the future.

What do you wish to do after you matriculate high school?
I want to study at the African Leadership Institute or the Springs College.
There, I will be able to improve my leadership skills and make the most of my ambitions.
I have always had a passion for Africa and would like to see more of it and make a difference where I can.
What are some of your hobbies outside of school?
I love to read, especially books about Africa and different parts of the world that I would like to see one day.
I also love playing netball and other sports with my friends and peers at school.
Is there anything you learned from the cleaning project?
I learned that you have to create the community you want to live in. It is up to you to make the place you’re living in one you can be proud of.
