The other three male passengers pulled out guns and ordered the victim to lie on the floor of the taxi.
One of the passengers then started assaulting the man with a hammer on his knees and kicked him all over.
They briefly stopped to search him and took his cellphone, bag, bank cards and money before forcing him out of the taxi.
The victim sustained serious injuries and sought help from security guards at Trade Centre who called an ambulance and the police.
He was taken to the Far East Rand Hospital for treatment.
Springs police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora warned commuters not to take taxis anywhere but at the taxi rank to avoid being robbed by senseless criminals.
