Deidre Vrey has been a long-standing member of the Selection Park Tennis Club and has been instrumental in the growth it has enjoyed over the years. She has been playing since she can remember and the tennis club is her favourite stomping ground.
How long have you been playing tennis?
I have been playing since I was eight years old and have no plans of stopping anytime soon.
How long have you been playing at the club?
I started here seven years ago and I love playing here.
What does the club offer players?
We try to get our players to play as much tennis as possible. We host league games as well as senior and junior tournaments. Our players also take part in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments. The club also invites players from other clubs in the country to introduce them to new opponents.
Does the club offer any coaching?
We have great coaches at the club. Pieter Stoltz is our resident coach and then Mike Ritchie and Kobie du Preez offer excellent coaching as well. Many people who want to join tennis clubs feel they aren’t good enough or don’t know how to play, but at this club, we have people of all skill levels and we all grow and learn as we play.
How has the club changed over the years?
We have seen many great people come and go, but we have great memories of them. Many of our talented players have made us proud of their achievements. People are also very proud of the club and have helped us clean and maintain the courts and surrounding areas.
Who have some of the club’s stand-out players been?
We have had many excellent players over the years. Danielle Chapman and Eben Maré made the international scene and competed in America. Anastasia Pesic received a sports scholarship and is now in America.
