Getting to know Kathy Preston

"Our biggest challenge is getting donations."

Springs resident Kathy Preston has committed to take care of the ducks at the pond on Nigel Road and her efforts have paid off.
She and her husband, Henry, have committed their free time to feed and care for the ducks and geese.
Kathy and Henry have also invested a lot of time and effort to maintain the pond and its surrounding area.

What made you decide to take care of the pond and ducks?
It’s such a nice pond really, and people should be able to visit it and enjoy themselves.
The ducks and geese are beautiful birds and they need to be taken care of.
The park around it is a disgrace and we don’t want the pond to end up looking the same.
What did the pond look like before you and your husband got involved?
It looked horrible, the park surrounding it was a disgrace.
There was only a wooden fence around the park so there was litter everywhere. The ducks were not enjoying a quality of life at all.

What did you and your husband do once you got involved?
The first thing we did was ask the City for a steel fence and we eventually received one.
In the beginning, we received a lot of help from the community.
There was a woman who frequently donated bags of mielies to feed the ducks. We also had children from some of the local schools visit the ducks and feed them.
Last year, we installed a pump to keep the water clean.
What have been some of the challenges in restoring and maintaining the pond?
Our biggest challenge is getting donations.
We also need volunteers to maintain the area around the pond, but overall we are very happy with what we have been able to do with the pond.
