A family feud led to a young woman being convicted of assault.

Karen Mitchelle Kotze, 23, a former Springs Advertiser reporter, was initially charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

She was found guilty on the lesser charge of common assault.
Mitchelle was sentenced to an R1 000 fine or 120 days conditionally suspended for five years.

The woman she assaulted, Elizabeth Dorothy ‘Dot’ Flynn, is the editor of the Brakpan Herald newspaper, and the mother of Kotze’s live-in boyfriend, Kevin Flynn.

The case resulted from an incident, which occurred on August 14 this year at the Paul Krugersoord home shared by Kotze and Kevin.

Boiling water was flung at Flynn, which resulted in severe burns.

Passing sentence in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning, magistrate Andries du Plessis said: “It is unfortunate that these cases appear before the court. It is a family matter.”

After the criminal case, which included many allegations and counter-allegations, both sides said they were considering taking civil action.

Flynn said she would sue for damages, such as pain and suffering, while Kotze and Kevin were considering a defamation action.
