Suspected robber killed during robbery

According to our sources, who requested to stay anonymous, the officer, who is a sergeant and was off-duty at the time, arrived at the scene in a SAPS-branded Ford car.

The SAPS has launched a manhunt for the accomplices of a Springs police officer believed to be one of the suspects during a robbery in Mapleton, Boksburg.
The robbery took place on June 15 at approximately 21:00.
According to our sources, who requested to stay anonymous, the officer, who is a sergeant and was off-duty at the time, arrived at the scene in a SAPS-branded Ford car.
The complainant, who works as a security guard, told police he was with his colleague when the suspects stopped at the gate and hooted to get their attention.

They requested to enter the premises and said they were looking for suspects who entered the property through the fence.
That is when the complainant and his colleague noticed two armed men coming from behind them.
They forced the guards to the ground and asked for their guns.
The victim told the men his gun was in the safe in the guardroom and the sergeant escorted him.
Once they reached the guardroom, a shootout ensued as the complainant had his gun on him the whole time.
The sergeant was fatally shot and the complainant was shot in the face, arm and stomach by the sergeant.
Seeing what had happened, the sergeant’s accomplices took his firearm and that of the victim and fled the scene in the car they had arrived in.

Six 9mm cartridges and five 9mm rounds were later found on the scene.
Gauteng police spokesperson Capt Mavela Masondo said police are still searching for other suspects and are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in apprehending the suspects to call the nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
Information can also be given anonymously via the MySAPS, which can be downloaded from any smartphone.
Masondo failed to answer questions regarding if the car used by the suspects was really a police vehicle and which station it is assigned to.
He also failed to answer if the sergeant has been linked to any other crimes or if any of the weapons used during the robbery have been recovered.
