Presidents Dam cleared but job not complete

The piles of decaying on the park is a terrible sight.

Presidents Dam in Dersley has been cleared of the hyacinth that has plagued it for many years but the job has seemingly only been left half done.
The invasive plant has been spreading over the dam for many years, covering its entire surface and rendering it unusable.
Residents complained about how the hyacinth is an eyesore and kills the fish in the dam, which was once a popular angling destination.
The Advertiser has since 2018 asked the City of Ekurhuleni to address the situation, and in 2020 the municipality deployed a dredger to clear the plants.

For the first time in many years, the dam has been cleared of hyacinth and the dam can again be utilised.
However, the discarded plants have been dumped on the side of the dam and have not been removed.
The pile of decaying plants is not only unsightly but also produces a terrible stench.
“I am pleased that it has been cleared of the hyacinth but the municipality did not finish their job. The pile of decaying hyacinth is a terrible sight.
“The rotting stuff should have been taken away already,” said ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin.
