Residents get their hands dirty to clean up the town

The organisation bases its work on three pillars: mass mobilisation, acts of service and direct elections.

Move One Million took to the streets on Saturday to clean up the old SPAR lot and Windmill Park in Springs.

“We are tired of the corruption.
“Everywhere you go in South African there is garbage pilling up like this,” said Charles Barrell of Move One Million.

The clean-up is part of the campaign to collect one million trash bags throughout the country.
They aim to bring communities together to make the country a better place to live and to involve the youth and educate on the importance of keeping our communities safe and clean.
Move One Million is a non-racial, non-political and non-denominational organisation.

Kyle and Dean Stone filled up their trash bags at the old SPAR lot on Saturday.

“We are going to build a database to keep track of everything that is happening in all the areas we are cleaning up.
“If the people who are responsible do not do their jobs, we are prepared to take them to court.
“We need to empower the people, to take their power back.
“We need to restore our communities, ward by ward if we have to,” said Barrell.

Dean Stone, councillor for Ward 75, came to support the initiative with his son Kyle.
“We just decided to join them because they are supporting us, by doing this.
“Seeing the community come together in this way is amazing, but this is not sustainable.

Denise Scarrott showed up ready to work in her sun hat and gloves.

“In the end, the metro needs to take responsibility and that is my job.
“I hope they see what we are going and then maintain these areas,” he said.
Stone encouraged the community to continue paying their rates and taxes.
