Family left without a ceiling in council-owned home

Heydenrych lives with his wife and two children and fears for their safety.

Martin Heydenrych’s house is in complete disrepair and he has become frustrated with the municipality’s lack of action.
Heydenrych lives in municipal housing in Olympia Parks, Geduld, and according to him, the maintenance of these houses falls squarely on the council’s shoulders.

“I fear for their safety. The ceiling just collapsed for no reason and it could easily have fallen on us and caused serious injury,” said Heydenrych.
The collapsed ceiling has also left electric wires exposed and leave the family vulnerable to the approaching cold weather.

“I have contacted the Department of Housing many times and they tell me they don’t have the money to fix the houses.
“I don’t know what to do anymore. If nothing gets done the house will just get worse until it completely collapses,” said Heydenrych.
Comment from the City of Ekurhuleni will be published once it has been received.
