Delving into the past

The suspects escaped, leaving the stolen items behind.

This week we look back at the Advertiser’s September 24, 1993 edition.
• Screams thwarted robber’s plans
A security’s guard’s scream thwarted the plans of robbers who had broken into a Nuffield, Springs, business on Monday morning.
After loading a company van full of stolen goods the men had to flee on foot, leaving the precious booty behind.
According to police six suspects overwhelmed a guard at Woodhead Kempo in Butler Road at approximately 1.30am.
After tying him up with wire they proceeded to load a company van with, among other things, a gas bottle, cutting torch and welding machine.
The security guard screamed before the men could drive off, alerting residents opposite the business who rushed to the scene of the crime.
The suspects escaped, leaving the stolen items behind.

• Angler catches big prize
One of the anglers of the Daggafontein Angling Club had a pleasant surprise this weekend after an hour-long tussle with his lines.
Angling in the Delmas waters of the Vaal Dam, Mark van Zyl managed to land a ‘grootbek geelvis’, weighing in at 10,99kg.
Using only light tackle to bring the fish in, Mark has insisted that the rare catch be mounted.
