Final notices go up in smoke

The CoE confirmed the men photographed burning notices were working for the appointed contractors.

UPDATE: The CoE confirmed the men seen burning the final notices work for the appointed contractor.

Strubenvale Extension residents were shocked to see what appeared to be City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) contractors burning final notices in the area last Wednesday.
Notices are delivered to residents who have failed to pay their municipal bills and are on the verge of being cut off from receiving municipal services.

The men are believed to have been delivering final notices in Strubenvale Extension last Wednesday.

The City of Ekurhuleni has hired contractors to deliver notices in Springs.
Seeing that failure to deliver notices leads to disconnection, the City said contractors have to provide proof they have delivered notices.

“Notices have tear-off strips, called stubs, on which descriptive data about the respective properties are recorded for verification of delivery of notices, that are brought to administrators of contractors at CoE offices.
“The property description and location of notice delivery, for example letter box, and gate would serve as proof of delivery to said properties.
“Devices are also used to take pictures of said property to verify delivery,” said City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

Dlamini also clarified that the City’s Credit Control and Debt Collection Policy stipulates on, 5.7 (b) that failure to deliver, or send a pre-termination notice does not relieve a consumer from paying such arrears.
The CoE did not confirm if the men photographed burning notices were working for the appointed contractors.
Ward councillor Dean Stone said he would follow up on the matter.
