Delving into the past

Springs woman Sandi Langton has spent the last three weeks cycling through Europe on her BMW motorbike.

This week we look back at the Springs Advertiser’s July 28, 2006, edition.
• Cyclist caught in crash
A 75-year-old man is in a serious condition after he was involved in an accident involving two cars and a bicycle on Tuesday at around 1.30pm on the corner of Butler and Wit roads in Nuffield.
A driver of a green Mercedes-Benz was taken to the Glynnwood Hospital, where he was being treated for a serious skull injury.
According to Quentin Botha, a paramedic at Glynnwood Hospital, the occupant of the other vehicle was taken to hospital by a member of the public.
He urges the public to rather phone for help before moving an accident victim as this could make their injuries worse.
The man riding the bicycle suffered minor cuts and abrasions.

• Local biker swelters in 47 degrees heat
Springs woman Sandi Langton has spent the last three weeks riding through Europe on her BMW motorbike.
Langton decided a few years back to ride her motorbike all the way from England to South Africa.
She and her husband, Paul Harner, started the trip of over 32 000km on July 9.
They left Dover, England, and have travelled through Spain so far.
Langton (35) said she loves Spanish life.
“What festive people!
“So far Pamplona has to be the high point for me,” said Langton.
Langton and Harner will be stopping in Germany for a short break as they found that travelling by bike is tough.
“The weather is baking.
“Some times it even reaches 47°C.
“We are already scruffy travellers, but loving it and still looking forward to getting into Africa and back home,” Langton said.
If everything goes to plan, this trip will take about nine months and they will arrive in Cape Town towards the end of February.

• Bonus points for Valke despite 31-40 loss
Medicover Valke have lost their fourth out of five games in the Absa Currie Cup when they were beaten 31-40 by Western Province at the Bosman Stadium on Friday night.
The visitors banked their fourth win in five matches and were cheered every step of the way by supporters who seemed to outnumber the homeside’s fans.
The Valke played hard and gave the opposition everything they had in a keenly contested first half, which ended with the teams separated by just two points.
The homeside stayed within striking distance of their more fancied opposition, with Riaan Viljoen and Mpho Matsaung each claiming tries.
But there was no stopping the Capetonians in the second half.
Despite the defeat, Valke supporters also had something to celebrate, despite their team losing by nine points when Sarel Pretorius scored the last try of the match that earned the Valke a deserved bonus point.
