• Speedsters to be zapped with laser cameras
A decision was passed by the Springs City Council at their monthly meeting, held on Tuesday, to buy three laser speed cameras.
The laser speed cameras use video cameras and not conventional cameras and require little or no maintenance.
The cameras will be purchased at a cost of R187 000.
Included in this amount is the purchase of a mobile weighing bridge costing R40 000.
The purchase of the bridge will do much to simplify the fight against overloaded trucks and the resultant damage done by too heavy trucks on Springs’ roads.

• Five-year-old girl saves her family as house burns
A fire broke out in the dining room at approximately 4.20am on Wednesday.
Mr. Sibanyoni says that his daughter Thembi woke up coughing and told her parents that there was smoke in her room and that she could not breathe.
The family fled from the burning house in Ellis Drive and stood in the garden while Mr. Sibanyoni asked a neighbour to notify the Springs Emergency Services.
While waiting for the emergency services to arrive, he broke the dining room window and used the hosepipe in a futile attempt to extinguish the flames.
Three rooms were severely burned and the remainder of the home had been damaged by the smoke.
On Wednesday family members laboriously tried to clean up the mess the fire had left in its wake.
The lounge and dining room suites, curtains, hi fi and other items were destroyed in the fire.
Mr. Sibanyoni said that the contents of the house were not insured.
He suspects that the fire was caused by an electrical fault.

“Mr. van Dyk and Mr. van Rooyen were held up by the men and Mr. van Dyk managed to push a desk toward them. The armed man fired several shots before running away,” said Raper.
