• Regiment building up for sale
Many Springs residents who drive past the abandoned Springs regiment building wonder about it.
The Springs City Council advertised for tenders for the purchase of the 3.4027 hectare property with the buildings and ‘improvements’.
An organisation approached the council with a view to leasing the property as a haven for street children. The council’s response was that there were plans for the site in the future.
According to the public relations department, the building has been vacant since the end of January 1995.
The land is zoned for governmental use and will be suitably rezoned according to whichever tender is successful.

• Rotary induction
Springs Rotary Club members gathered at the Oasis restaurant on June 3 to induct their new president for 1997/98, Rob Jobling.
Also inducted during the function was Rotary Anns president for 1997/98 Marlene Gordon.
The formal affair had as its guest speaker district governor elect Alan Barrable.
Barrable is a past mayor of Benoni and has held positions on the national and international boards of Round Table and Rotary.
In his keynote address, Barrable encouraged his fellow Rotarians to use the four Ps of People – Programmes, Public relations, Pride and Passion – as a guide to becoming more effective in the valuable work they do.
The Rotary international theme for the 97/98 year is ‘Show rotary cares’, and Barrable encouraged the Rotarians present to work toward this lofty theme with the question: “Will you be proud of yesterday?”
