Sewage problem reaches breaking point

Daggafontein residents overwhelmed by sewage

Residents in Daggafontein are facing an uphill challenge withsewage.
Raymond Johnson owns a home in the area and is becoming increasingly fed up with the situation.
“We have been struggling with this issue for three years now.
“Whenever the metro comes to fix the issue, it’s fine for a couple of months before we are stuck with the same problem,” said Johnson.
Sewage rises out of the manhole covers and Johnson’s entire backyard becomes submerged in raw sewage.

The home owner is forced to use his hosepipe to prevent the sewage from spilling into his house, which he said has caused a massive increase in his water bills.
Additionally, sewage sometimes comes up through the drains in the bath and showers.
Johnson alleged the problem is caused by old pipes which are unable to handle large amounts of sewage.

Sewage spills out of the drains in the shower of Daggafontein resident Raymond Johnson’s home.

“The smell is terrible and we can’t even breathe sometimes.
“A person can’t live like this, something has to be done very soon.
“I have children who play around in the yard the whole time and it has become a health hazard,” said Johnson.

Johnson said he is not alone and that many residents in the area have become increasingly frustrated.
He alleged the metro plans to build a series of flats and houses in Daggafontein close to where he lives, which has become a cause for concern.
“If these pipes can’t handle the normal amount, how are they going to cope when all of those flats go up?” he asked.
Comment from the City of Ekurhuleni will be published once it has been received.
