Geduld Methodist to celebrate 100 years

Springs Methodist Church celebrates important milestone

The Geduld Methodist Church is celebrating an important and impressive milestone this month – it’s centenary.
However, due to Covid-19 there will be no festivities this year, but next year they will celebrate ”101 and not out”.
The church was the first Methodist Church in Springs and is known as the ”mother church” in the area.
Its interesting and unique history will be recounted in a book which will be available in 2021.
Springs looked very differently in those days, but the church has remained popular and relevant over the many years.

When the church was founded in 1920, there were no shops in Geduld, only houses, and the congregation was very small but has grown steadily over the years.
The church had three services each Sunday.
It was officially opened on November 17, 1920, and still operates from the same building.
Throughout the years, it has provided invaluable service to the community and continues to offer a soup kitchen, homework club and even has a charity shop.
The soup kitchen was especially important during the lockdown where economic hardships and massive job losses left many residents without the means to buy food.

Past Jonathan Coates acknowledged the loyal congregation who have been so faithful over the years.

Cooks Paula Jansen and Felicity Links fed hundreds of hungry residents every week with their signature soup during this difficult period.
The church’s main aim, however, remains to provide spiritual guidance to all people of Springs.
“A big problem here in Geduld is poverty, and the mindset of poverty which needs to change.
“I want to let people know they can lift themselves out of their situations and live the lives they want.
“I want to inspire them to put all of their faith and trust in God and trust Him to better their lives,” said Past
