Blocked drain a hazard for residents

Flooded driveway poses a problem for Geduld residents

Residents in Fifth Avenue, Geduld, dread the rain.
The reason for their worry is a drain outside their building that gets blocked every time it rains and floods the area in front of their gate.

“When it rains, we can’t drive our car out of the garage. It doesn’t have to be a lot of rain for it to flood.
“We’ve complained about it to the City of Ekurhuleni, but they told us it’s a Metro Rail problem. When we approached Metro Rail, they told us it was a City of Ekurhuleni problem,” said Lisa Volbrect.
She said they are now stuck between the two and don’t know what to do.
This has been going on for approximately three years and she said they are at their wits’ end.
According to Volbrecht, on the days the area is flooded, her husband has to get a lift from a friend to get to work.

When that friend is not available, he has no choice but to drive through the water and she worries about the long-term damage sustained to their car.
“I worry about the day I have a real emergency and cannot drive out. What will happen then?” asked Volbrecht.
Comment from the City of Ekurhuleni will be published once it has been received.
