Bogus doctor a no-show in court

Bogus doctor fails to turn up at Springs Magistrate's Court

The Springs Magistrate’s Court has issued a warrant of arrest for the bogus doctor who was arrested in Selcourt last Thursday evening after she failed to show up in court yesterday.
The 35-year-old woman, who first appeared in court last Friday and was granted bail, was due to appear in court yesterday but didn’t arrive.
She was charged with contravening the Health Act and was pretending to be a cardiologist.

At the time of the arrest, the woman had a stethoscope, laptop, uniform, patient files and a prescription pad in her possession.
The arrest was the result of a joint operation between police and the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).                  Police said the arrest came after they received a tip-off from a patient who had received a prescription from the doctor, which raised alarm bells for her.
Springs police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora said the woman was conducting house calls to treat patients and had practices in Selcourt and Geduld and claimed she consulted at the Far East Rand Hospital.
“We have confirmed with the HPCSA that the woman is not licensed to practice as a doctor in South Africa.                                                  “She was using the the practice number of another cardiologist who is based in Centurion.
“We are also following up on other leads we have uncovered during the course of our investigation,” said Ramphora.
