For the love of reading

Helping children develop a love for reading

The Lushanta Reading Foundation officially opened its doors on Saturday morning at the Tonk Meter Crossing Shopping Centre.
Speaking at the launch, Carolynn Weedon, administrator of Lushanta, said the foundation teaches children through different mediums to love reading.

Children are taught through different mediums to love reading.

“These range from one-on-one reading to poster recognition of different words, as an example from a poster on transport, children would learn the English word for different modes of transportation before forming sentences with the words they’ve learnt.

“They would also learn the difference between the nouns and adjectives before they get to do word puzzles.
“The older children are allowed to enter weekly Spelling Bees, where small prizes are given,” said Weedon.
The foundation, which has been operating for a while before its official launch, had seen a steady growth in the number of children attending every week, with an average of 65 to 80 children each Saturday, at no cost.

Children learn the basics of the English language before moving on to more complex lessons.

At present, the foundation caters to pre-school and primary school children.
“Our main goal is to grow and start this foundation throughout Gauteng and eventually South Africa,” said Weedon.
