House fire leaves one injured, 16 stranded

Tenants left desperate after their belongings were damaged in a fire

Seventeen residents of a house in Dersley Park that burned to ashes in the early hours of last Thursday morning have nothing but the clothes on their backs.
The fire quickly spread through the Topaz Avenue home and while there were no fatalities, one man was badly injured and required hospitilisation.

“It was around 2am when we heard a noise and soon after that, there were flames everywhere,” explained resident Joyce Madzi.
She told the Advertiser the injured man was getting children out of the burning house.

San van Wyk from Jesus is Light Church is committed to helping the victims get basic necessities, through the Jesus Outreach programme.

“When he was done, he realised the flames were too close to him,” she said.
Everything in the house was destroyed.

“They need everything from mattresses and pots to clothes and food. At this point, anything that can be donated will make a huge difference,” she said.
Jesus Outreach organised food and some clothes for the family.
Amanda Greybe, spokesperson of the Springs Police Station, confirmed the incident is under investigation.
