Springs Taxi Association warns commuters about illegal taxis

In addition to the taxis being implicated in the robbery of passengers, they also obstruct traffic, disturbing other road users.

The Springs Taxi Association is increasing its patrols around Springs to combat the wave of illegal taxis in town.
According to the association, there’s been an increase in the number of commuters who’ve reported being robbed while travelling in unregistered taxis.
The only taxis that are permitted to operate in town are those registered to the Springs Taxi Association.

To monitor the loading of passengers, the association will be increasing its patrols around town where the unregistered taxis reportedly operate.
The hot spots for these taxis include First Street, Third Street, Dorset Street (by Springs Arena), Second Avenue, Ermelo Road, Nigel Road, New Era and Nuffield.
In addition to the taxis being implicated in the robbery of passengers, they also obstruct traffic, disturbing other road users.
“We’re appealing to commuters to only get into taxis at the taxi rank. That way, we can immediately identify problems,” said Themba Nhleko and Lyric Tau of the taxi association.
Commuters can contact the association on 011 815 6240 and provide the taxi number located on the sticker on the side of the taxi, which will enable the association to verify if the taxi is registered.
