Operations in the City of Ekurhuleni over the past weekend yielded 265 arrests, including 245 motorists suspected of driving under the influence.
Conducted by members of the EMPD, the operation also saw the recovery of eight reported stolen or hijacked motor vehicles, and jointly with local SAPS members, 136 taverns were visited to check compliance with Covid-19 regulations.
During roving roadblocks in the East, North and Southern regions of the city, intoxicated male with female motorists between the ages of 20 and 59 were arrested.

In the Tsakani, Springs, Actonville, Benoni, Daveyton, Duduza and Etwatwa areas, 53 drivers were apprehended and 16 taverns visited.
In the Northern region, 60 intoxicated motorists found in the Kempton Park, Thembisa, Clayville and Olifantsfontein areas were locked up and 23 shebeens visited.
Meanwhile in the Southern region, 26 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in the Alberton, Germiston and Katlehong areas and 63 clubs visited.
EMPD Specialised Services members from different units nabbed 106 drunk drivers.
“Out of 102 pubs visited, only nine complied with Covid-19 lockdown regulations – patrons were under 50, the places closed before 10pm, they displayed control books, sanitisers were available and visitors were scanned,” said EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng.

In Boksburg, Kempton Park and Thembisa, 20 wrongdoers were also arrested for various crimes.
Eight abandoned reported stolen or hijacked motor vehicles were recovered in the Boksburg, Germiston and Katlehong areas, before they were impounded at the SAPS Van Ryn Deep Vehicle Pound in Benoni for safekeeping.
Those arrested face charges ranging from malicious damage to property, possession of suspected stolen property, driving while under the influence of alcohol and possession and dealing in narcotics.
They were escorted to different police stations and are expected to appear in the relevant magistrate’s courts soon.
